First released in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand is recognized internationally as symbol of prestige and wealth. It has the distinction of being the world’s first gold bullion coin and remains one of the most popular gold coins ever minted. Gold Krugerrand coins are the world's most highly recognizable form of gold bullion coinage, offering investors instant liquidity anywhere in the world.
Containing one troy ounce of pure gold, each Krugerrand gold coin has a small amount of copper added to provide increased durability. Essentially the coins are made of 22-karat alloy with a mass that is slightly greater than that of the fine gold contained which has been indicated on the coin's reverse. Krugerrands have a fairly unique quality in that they have no actual face value trading at a premium slightly over the current gold price.
The obverse of the Krugerrand depicts Paul Kruger, President of the original South African Republic between the years of 1883 and 1902, with the reverse showing the national animal of South Africa, the Springbok antelope. Beneath the depiction of the Springbok lie the words “FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD”, and directly above it are the words “KRUGERAND”. The name 'South Africa' and the coin's gold content are indicated in both English and Afrikaans.
Between 1985 up until the early 1990s, sanctions that were imposed internationally prohibited Krugerrands from being imported into many countries, although it was completely legal to trade and own coins that were already imported. It should be noted that those sanctions no longer apply, and today Krugerrands can be imported, exported and traded anywhere in the world.
More than 46 million ounces of gold have been sold in the form of Gold Krugerrands with more than 54 million coins being sold since the coins were first issued. The convenience of a one ounce legal tender pure gold bullion coin, which was guaranteed by the South African government for its weight and purity and gold content, quickly made the Krugerrand the most popular means for individuals to buy gold bullion. The incredible popularity and convenient nature of the Krugerrand later paved the way for other gold bullion coins such as the American Gold Eagle and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
