Gold Products: 2011 American Gold Eagles

2011 American Eagle Gold Coins

The 2011 American Gold Eagle will be available beginning on January 3, 2011. This is the date when the United States Mint’s exclusive network of authorized purchasers can begin to place orders for the highly-anticipated gold bullion coins. Broader distribution to the public is expected to occur shortly thereafter.

This year will mark the twenty-sixth year in which the Gold Eagle has been made available from the United States Mint. Since their introduction in 1986 these stunning 22 karat coins have been struck in bullion, proof and uncirculated varieties with only the bullion Gold Eagles being required by law. This fact can play a role in the availability and minting of the gold collector's coins.

Many collectors will recall that in 2009 the US Mint received orders for bullion Gold Eagles in record numbers. The Mint was unable to obtain sufficient quantities of blank gold planchets to meet the legally required demand for the bullion strikes. This shortage forced the Mint to cancel the Eagle proof and uncirculated versions in order to ensure adequate bullion production. Proof version of the American Gold Eagle did not return to the market in 2010, but the Mint also did not produce the uncirculated version of the coin during that year either.

Four different denominations of the gold Eagles are typically minted - one ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce versions are available with respective face values of $50, $25, $10 and $5. Due to unforeseen conditions the fractional sizes have been intermittently canceled in certain years (including the years 2009 and 2010) when only the bullion Eagle that was struck was the one ounce size.

When available collector grade Eagles may be purchased from the Mint directly. However, bullion Eagles are also sold by the United States Mint's authorized network of purchasers to the general public. The authorized network obtains bulk amounts of the coins directly from the Mint, then reselling them at a small premium above the current spot price of the gold.

2011 American Eagle Gold Coin Design

As in years past, the coin will feature a full-length image of the historical figure of Liberty on the obverse. Liberty is depicted wearing a flowing gown while holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left signifying her ongoing desire for peace. In the background rays of sunshine along with the US Capitol building are featured. The classic design is the work of renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was first featured on the $20 Gold Piece from 1907-1933. This design is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful images ever to be featured on a United States coin.

Miley Busiek designed the coin's reverse showing the nest of an eagle family including a mother and her hatchlings with an adult male soaring above.

2011 American Gold Eagles for Investment

Bullion Eagles are the only gold bullion coins whose weight and purity have been guaranteed by the United States government. Due to this guarantee, investors can purchase them for addition them to their individual retirement accounts (IRAs).

Bullion is a precious metal in its purest form. This term is most familiar when used in conjunction with gold or silver. Gold has been used as a form of tender since the days of Croesus, although those coins were more likely an amalgam of gold and silver. China also has an ancient history involving gold coins as do most modern countries.

From the beginning of the current crisis (i.e. since 2007) more and more people have turned their attention to gold as an investment. That is due to the crash of any other forms of investment and mostly of the real estate market. But buying gold is not an easy decision to make at present and the question arises: whether this is a golden opportunity to take such action.

Since gold is the most popular of all precious metals, gold investments are generally viewed as a hedge against any mishap or act of God such as war, falling currency, and crises of any kind. In fact, gold shares certain features with money and has been used as such throughout history.

Gold itself comes at a price which is set by the London gold fixing or gold fix. In addition to determining the price of gold twice a day, this procedure has an informal outcome. It creates a recognized rate that operates as a benchmark in pricing gold products and derivatives. It is practically a telephone meeting that takes place each business day at 10.30am and 3pm, London time, among the representatives of five bullion-trading companies of the London bullion market.

Given that new trading records have recently been set for gold futures contracts, one could say that we witness a new gold rush. On the face of it, this impression is emphasized by the fact that over the last decades gold investment had a low return as compared to stocks for example. However, people now tend to put more of their savings in gold only because of investment diversification. In other words, people have become cautious and avoid keeping all their eggs in one basket. They choose to invest in a variety of assets in order to reduce risk and maintain their overall return. The gains thus seem to be two-fold: safety and profit at the same time.

As shown above, it seems that gold is now in demand and gold prices are up. Despite this fact, gold proponents argue in favor of gold acquisitions on account of an indicator called the Real Interest Rate which can better render the larger picture of gold investment. Considering the pros and cons of buying gold, it may be however wise to know that it is best to become a gold owner when you need it. And if you need it now there are plenty of arguments to back your choice.

The most common and traditional way to Buy Gold is by investing in small bars or coins.
